Ingredients

for 4 servings

Tart:

  • 4 medium apples
  • 1 store-bought pie crust, thawed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar

Additional Ingredients:

  • whipped cream, optional
  • 3 scoops vanilla ice cream, optional
  • 3 sprigs fresh mint, optional
  • flaky sea salt, optional

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Make the tart: Stand 1 apple upright on a cutting board. Using a chef's knife, cut down into the apple to slice off a cheek from 1 half of the apple. Cut another cheek from the other half of the apple. Discard the remaining apple, or reserve for another use. Place 1 apple cheek, cut side down, on the cutting board. Thinly slice the cheek, keeping the slices touching and the cheek intact. Repeat this process with the remaining 3 apples. Set aside.
  3. Roll out the thawed pie crust dough. Lay the dough inside an 8-inch tart pan. Using your fingers, crimp the dough to the shape of the tart pan. Remove and discard any excess dough overhang. Using a fork, poke about 12 holes into the dough.
  4. Arrange the sliced apple cheeks, still intact and skin side up, inside the pie crust. Top evenly with the butter and brown sugar.
  5. Place the tart pan on a large baking sheet. Transfer to the oven, and bake for 40–45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. Remove from the oven, and let cook on a wire rack for about 10 minutes, or until the tart sides start to separate from the pan slightly.
  6. Remove the tart from the pan. If desired, garnish the tart with whipped cream, ice cream, mint leaves, and sea salt. Serve immediately.
  7. Enjoy!
