Ingredients
for 4 servings
Tart:
- 4 medium apples
- 1 store-bought pie crust, thawed
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
Additional Ingredients:
- whipped cream, optional
- 3 scoops vanilla ice cream, optional
- 3 sprigs fresh mint, optional
- flaky sea salt, optional
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Make the tart: Stand 1 apple upright on a cutting board. Using a chef's knife, cut down into the apple to slice off a cheek from 1 half of the apple. Cut another cheek from the other half of the apple. Discard the remaining apple, or reserve for another use. Place 1 apple cheek, cut side down, on the cutting board. Thinly slice the cheek, keeping the slices touching and the cheek intact. Repeat this process with the remaining 3 apples. Set aside.
- Roll out the thawed pie crust dough. Lay the dough inside an 8-inch tart pan. Using your fingers, crimp the dough to the shape of the tart pan. Remove and discard any excess dough overhang. Using a fork, poke about 12 holes into the dough.
- Arrange the sliced apple cheeks, still intact and skin side up, inside the pie crust. Top evenly with the butter and brown sugar.
- Place the tart pan on a large baking sheet. Transfer to the oven, and bake for 40–45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. Remove from the oven, and let cook on a wire rack for about 10 minutes, or until the tart sides start to separate from the pan slightly.
- Remove the tart from the pan. If desired, garnish the tart with whipped cream, ice cream, mint leaves, and sea salt. Serve immediately.
- Enjoy!
