Chili's Has Just Entered The Chicken Sandwich Wars With 6 New Crispy Chicken Sandwiches, So I Tried And Ranked All Of Them

The chicken sandwich race continues.

Popeyes added a crispy chicken sandwich to its menu in 2019, and the chicken sandwich wars have been raging ever since. After seeing the handheld’s immense success, several fast-food chains followed suit over the next few years, releasing their own poultry sammies in an attempt to compete. Latest to the game is Chili’s, as the casual sit-down chain just brought six crispy chicken sandwiches to its menu.

Six chicken sandwiches with various toppings and sauces, labeled: Spicy Big Crispy, Nashville Hot, Deluxe Big Crispy, Honey Chipotle, Big Crispy, Buffalo

Not only does Chili’s Big Crispy filet apparently clock in at about 82 percent bigger on average than that on the McDonald’s McCrispy, according to a local study, but two of the six sandwiches can also be ordered as part of the $10.99 3 For Me special, which comes with fries, bottomless chips and salsa, and a drink with unlimited refills. Add a $6 margarita (I had the pleasure of trying the Peachy Dream, complete with a peach ring garnish), and you’re really getting bang for your buck.

Chili’s chicken filet may be bigger and relatively affordable for its size and accompaniments, but how does it taste? As a food writer who’s reviewed nearly every fast-food chicken sandwich under the sun (both classic and spicy), I knew I was the tester for the job. Read on for my review of the entire lineup.

The Items

All six sandwiches start with a generously sized, hand-battered fried chicken breast filet and a toasted bun. As far as toppings go, they’re nearly all limited to pickles (besides the Deluxe), and a condiment or sauce on the bun or chicken. They’re all $15.49 à la carte except the Deluxe, which costs $16.99. That said, you can try the Big Crispy or Spicy Big Crispy for less by ordering the $10.99 3 For Me special. The sammies come with mac and cheese and fries, but you can substitute another side (I loved the sharp, slightly funky mac, but also highly recommend the street corn). Here are details on all the sandwiches:

The Test

Upon receiving the sandwiches, I photographed them whole and halved, so the cross-section and size of the filet were more visible. Next, I tasted each one and took notes on its breading, juiciness, toppings, and overall flavor.

Finally, I considered the sandwich’s value for its size and quality. I determined a rating, then ranked them from worst to best, with each average overall score being rounded to the nearest whole or half out of 10. I also considered whether or not they were a true upgrade from fast food, and if they could compete with the most popular chicken sandwiches of the drive-thru world.

The Results

6. Deluxe Big Crispy — If you like your chicken sammy with a bit more roughage than a few pickle chips, this is the one for you.

5. Honey-Chipotle Big Crispy — Swicy-loving folks will lean towards the sweet, sticky glaze. It delivered smoky notes of chipotle…but not much heat.

4. Big Crispy — This handheld proves that simplicity can be downright scrumptious. It honors the fast-food crispy chicken sandwich blueprint while delivering more in terms of portion size.

1. Spicy Big Crispy — If you’re a Popeyes stan like me, this pick will check all your boxes. It’s freakishly similar to the fast-food chain’s spicy chicken sandwich, but bigger.

Juiciness: 7/10

Toppings: 9/10

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, my top pick is the Spicy Big Crispy. For folks who are spice-averse, the O.G. Big Crispy is the best option. The only one I’d advise skipping is the Deluxe, because you’ll pay a bit more for extra toppings that I feel don’t truly improve the sandwich. But TBH, none of them were total losses.

Overall, Chili’s new crispy chicken sandwiches offer larger filets that’ll satisfy your craving for fast food without you needing to brave the drive-thru. Plus, I’d imagine the quality is more consistent at Chili’s without the rush of fast-food assembly (we’ve all received a lopsided, messy AF fast-food sandwich before, right?).

I’d say not to let the $15 price tag deter you; when you consider the size of the sandwich and its included sides, you’d likely end up paying the same for less at a fast-food joint. Stick to the $10.99 3 For Me special, and it’s a total steal.
